Fernando Nardi

Fernando Nardi
Position: Senior programmer and European representative
Qualification: Assistant professor, Ph.D.

Fernando Nardi, civil hydraulic engineer with a PhD in flood hydrology from the Sapienza University of Rome, is actually assistant professor at the University for Foreigners of Perugia (Italy) in affiliation with the WAter Resources REsearch DOocumentation Centre (WARREDOC). Prof. Nardi’s research and consultancy activities relates specifically to the development and application of advanced GIS and 2D hydraulic modeling software for urban planning, flood risk assessment, management and mapping. A fellow member the Honors Center of Italian Universities (H2CU), senior programmer and European representative for the flood modelling software FLO-2D, he has participated to several international research and consulting projects providing his professional services as flood, mudflow and debris flow specialist within water-driven risk mapping projects. Prof. Nardi is the co-founder of several applied research and technology transfer business initiatives and in particular: GISTAR research group in collaboration with Tuscia University, HAREC (Hydraulics Applied Research & Engineering Consulting) based in Italy and more recently IDRAN Engineering & technology, an international company based in Rome (Italy) and Miami (Florida, USA).

The origins of the FLO-2D model grew out of a model developed by Jim O’Brien for FEMA called MUDFLOW in 1989 while at FLO Engineering, Inc.  Jim O’Brien is president and a senior hydraulic engineer with FLO-2D Software, Inc. Dr. O’Brien has Masters degrees in aerospace and civil engineering from the University of Colorado and a Ph.D. civil engineering (hydraulics program) from Colorado State University. He received an undergraduate aerospace engineering degree from St. Louis University. He is the author of numerous articles on hydrology, river hydraulics, flood routing and hyperconcentrated sediment flows and is a licensed professional engineer in four states. He has over 20 years experience in hydraulics and sediment transport as a consulting engineer.
