This training package shows how to access the FLO-2D help files and data file processor programs.

Setup and Getting Started
Use the Grid Developer System (GDS) to build a basic overland flow model. This is an introductory course on the GDS in which the user can create a grid system with interpolated elevation data, establish the computational domain, add an inflow hydrograph and run the model.

Overland Flow Details
Lesson 2

Use the GDS to edit overland flow details on a project. This lesson shows the user how to edit grid element elevation and N-value data. The user will also learn how to create building, street and levee components in a simple project.

Elevation Data Preparation

This training package will outline the process to develop elevation data for the GDS and QGIS.  It details how to research, download and reproject and convert units on various types of elevation files.  Some file types include ascii xyz data files used by GDS and geotif files used by QGIS and the FLO-2D Plugin.

Floodplain Cross Sections

Floodplain cross sections are used to collect discharge data across a series of cells on the floodplain. This video shows how to create them, edit them, and read the data they generate in HYDROG.EXE and in the CROSSQ.OUT, CROSSMAX.OUT, and HYCROSS.OUT results files.

Hydrology Modeling Rainfall and Infiltration

This is an advanced training package that focuses on Modeling Rainfall and Infiltration.

Floodplain inflow

Floodplain inflow nodes are used to define a point or line location where an inflow hydrograph is placed to add water to the grid system.  This training package defines the various types of inflow conditions and explain how to set them up using the FLO-2D Plugin for QGIS.

FLO-2D Channels

This training package consists of a 4-part series of training videos and lessons covering FLO-2D channel development.  Each video begins with a PowerPoint presentation on modeling channels in FLO-2D.  The remainder of the video demonstrates how to perform the hands-on lesson.  All data files needed to complete the lesson are provided with this training package. This data should be used with the Channel Modeling Guidelines. This document is located:

Basic Channel

This lesson of the training package shows how to use the GDS create a basic rectangular channel from scratch.  The channel segment is created along a polyline and cross section data is added to each channel grid element.  The bed slope profile of the channel segment is defined using the PROFILES processor program.  An inflow node is added to the channel and the project simulation is run and evaluated.

Advanced Channel I

This lesson shows the user how to convert a HEC-RAS channel into a FLO-2D channel using the GDS.  The HEC-RAS geo-referenced data files are imported into the GDS and converted into a FLO-2D channel segment.  The cross section data is also converted and automatically assigned to the FLO-2D channel segment.  The completed model is run and analyzed.

Advanced Channel II

This lesson presents the guidelines used to optimize and stabilize the FLO-2D channel simulations.  A detailed PowerPoint presentation shows the user how to use various modeling parameters to enhance simulations by decreasing total run-time and minimizing channel surging.

Advanced Natural Channel

This lesson is a comprehensive hands on tutorial that shows the user how to complete a channel with natural cross section geometry.  This is a start to finish guide that covers each step in detail.  Video and tutorial (Lesson 14) are included.

Modeling Levees, Berms and Floodwalls

This training package explains how to model Floodwalls, Berms and Levees using the FLO-2D model. The videos and presentation files cover creating levees and breaching them.

Modeling Walls with QGIS

This training package outlines the process to convert a Walls shapefile to a Levee layer.  More information on modeling walls can be found in the 2020 version of the Levee guidelines.  This document can be found here:

Storm Drain Modeling

This training package instructs the user on how to add a storm drain network to a FLO-2D model. FLO-2D simulates an exchange process between the surface and the storm drain system. Flow can travel into the storm drain and back to the surface as drainage or backwater under pressure. The Storm Drain Guidelines should be used along with this training package. It is available here:

This training package focuses on FLO-2D component to simulate sediment transport. This component is used to model sediment transport simulations in riverine and alluvial fan studies.

Mud and Debris Flow Modeling

This training package focuses on FLO-2D component to simulate hyper concentrated sediment flows (mud and debris flows). This component is used to model mud and debris flow hazards worldwide including tailings dam failures.

The presentation is divided into two training sessions:

Session I.
  • Physical processes of hyperconcentrated sediment flow;
  • Examples of mud and debris flows;
  • FLO-2D mathematical representation;
  • How to perform a mud and debris simulation.
Session II.
  • Mud and debris flow simulation guidelines;

  • Potential flood scenarios;

Tailings Dam Modeling

Tailings dam modeling requirements are evolving with new Global Standards.  This training package will show the user how to set up and use the Tailings Dam tool.

Two Phase Flow Tailings Dam Failure

This 2-phase modeling approach will represent a new level of predictive analysis for tailings dam breach and mudflows.

  • Simulate tailings dam breach with overlaid water storage
  • Predict downstream fluid and mudflow inundation
  • Compute mudflow – fluid exchange with scour and deposition
  • Simulate downstream tributary inflow and flow into lakes and reservoirs
  • Predict sediment routing by size fraction
  • Assess mudflow cessation and sediment deposition
  • Combine with the existing tailings dam tool to verify volume releases

This new hyperconcentrated sediment flow component will initially be distributed as a separate model for tailings dam failures and will be absolutely FREE to current Pro users.

Multiple Grid System Flow Exchange

This training package focuses modeling upstream to downstream domain water exchange between multiple grid systems.

Optimization and Troubleshooting Training Package

This is a four-part training package that shows the user how to improve speed and stability and how to troubleshoot errors using FLO-2D, the GDS and other processor programs.

Optimization

The model is controlled by a time step that automatically decrements due to exceeding a numerical stability criteria. If “sticky” grid elements are causing the time step to decrement too many times, it can be modified to prevent this. More information on this topic is available in the FLO-2D Reference Manual and the Data Input Manual (toler.dat tab). Both of these are installed with the software here:

Limiting Froude Number and Depth Variable n-Value

FreqPlot Introduction Training Package

This is a basic training and demonstration package for the FreqPlot hydrologic frequency analysis program. This program computes rainfall and flood frequency on a King’s Table (four return period plotting papers). The program was created by Darde de Roulhac and the graphical interface was designed by Fernando Nardi (HAREC/IDRAN).
